What Does Cinematic TV Really Mean?
One of these things is not like the other. The word cinematic gets thrown around a lot in relation to ambitious TV. You hear that a particular show is very cinematic, or that a certain scene was cinematic, or that the direction was cinematic. But what does that word mean, really?
I think I know what it means to some people: Big. Exciting. Expensive-looking. Not like your usual cheap-and-functional-looking television show, where, to paraphrase a crack once made by The New Yorker’s Richard Brody, storytelling and characterization are so word-dependent, and so largely uninterested in thinking visually, that the people who make the shows might as well have saved themselves the expense of making an actual program and just emailed viewers PDFs of the script.

How could The Overstory be considered a book of the year? | Richard Powers
Reading groupRichard PowersHow could The Overstory be considered a book of the year?Richard Powers’ novel has its heart in a fine place, but it works by browbeating the reader with lectures and daft melodrama
Let’s start with the good news. The Overstory contains many clever ideas. Structurally, it aims for something interesting, unfolding (as the sleeve of my copy handily explains) “in concentric rings of fable”. Richard Powers neatly brings his characters together around a central point – in his case, a giant redwood tree, with Powers writing eloquently about the interdependence of trees, how they help each other to spread and grow, and even warn each other about dangers using “aerosol signals”, one tree easing the way for others.
In Emotionally Charged 'Blue,' Sex Is Graphic, But Not Gratuitous
Blue Is the Warmest Color, a coming-of-age movie about the love affair between two young women, has been criticized as pornographic and exploitive. But critic David Edelstein says the film artfully captures the intensity of sexual discovery — and dependency. (Recommended)
